DAILY DEVOTIONS – FRIDAY JUNE 5, 2020

Joshua 5:13-15  (NIV)  …Joshua… looked up and saw right in front of him a man standing,  holding his drawn sword.  Joshua stepped up to him and said,  “Whose side are you on—ours or our enemies?”  He said,  “Neither,  I’m commander of God’s army.  I’ve just arrived.”  Joshua fell,  face to the ground,  and worshiped.  “What orders does my Master have for his servant.”

Scholars consider this  “commander of God’s army”  to be a  “theophany”— a physical manifestation of Yahweh.  Notice how Joshua immediately falls and worships and calls Him Master and asks for orders.  God did not intend Joshua to lead Israel to conquer the Promised Land through his own power or ability.  The real leader of the Israelites was the Lord,  Himself.  What work has the Lord put into your hands?  Upon whose power do you depend?  Your power will never be enough.  Follow the Lord’s orders and let Him lead you.  Then you will have good success.
