DAILY DEVOTIONS – MONDAY JULY 13, 2020

James 1:12 (NIV)  Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial,  because when they have stood the test,  they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.

The half-brother of Jesus wrote this book (Gal. 1:19) sometime between A.D. 48 and 62.  He was an unbeliever during the ministry of Jesus (John 7:3-5),  but a post-Resurrection appearance of Christ to him (I Cor. 15:7) probably led to his conversion because he is numbered with the believers in Acts 1:14.  He was the leader of the church in Jerusalem (Acts 15:13) during the Diaspora (the Roman dispersion of Jews).  James describes the characteristics of true faith and how it connects with life in the midst of tests and temptations.  Temptations are not sourced in God.  But tests,  if we respond correctly to them,  can build a strong,  determined faith.  “Trials-faith-patience (vv. 2-3)—this is the universal formula for maturing for the people of God.”* How good are we at perseverance?  The last several months has provided us opportunities for growth.  What have you learned about yourself,  about God,  about others?  James teaches us much about the need for faith to manifest in behavior as well as belief,  particularly in tough times.  How are you doing with that?  (*Hayford Bible Handbook)
