The purpose of Luke’s genealogy was to show that Christ was of Davidic lineage through Mary, since Joseph was only his legal father. Luke was also showing that Christ was the Savior “not only of the children of Abraham (as in Matthew 1:1) but also the Savior of the children of Adam (the entire human race).” To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12).
