[I John 2:27] But you have received the Holy Spirit, and He lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what He teaches is true—it is not a lie.
This verse is NOT teaching us that we should not study God’s Word or listen to Bible teachers. Reading this verse in context, we realize it is referring to the false teachers of that day who were trying to influence the followers of Jesus Christ. The anointing of the Holy Spirit enables us instinctively to differentiate between truth and error and pick up on false teachings and lies of deceivers. He “guides us into all truth” (John 16:13). False teachers exist even today. It is important for us to know the truth of God’s Word so that the Spirit can bring to our memory everything Jesus has said to us (John 14:26). Do you live off one meal a week? Don’t live off one Sunday morning sermon a week! Read God’s Word every day and invite the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to understand and apply it. Only then will you be able to discern between truth and error with the Holy Spirit’s help.
