Matthew 1:16 (TPT) …who was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary the mother of Jesus, who is called ‘The Anointed One.’”
Notice that here Joseph is named the husband of Mary, not the father of Jesus. Remember when Mary and Joseph got separated from the twelve-year old Jesus for three days in Jerusalem and they finally found Him in the Temple, Jesus’ response was: Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be here in my Father’s house… (Luke 2:49). Though the good and honorable Joseph stood at Mary’s side in raising Jesus, both parents knew who Jesus was: He is the divine portrait, the true likeness of the invisible God, and the firstborn heir of all creation. He existed before anything was made, and now everything finds completion in him…and God is satisfied to have all His fullness dwelling in Christ. (Colossians 1:15-19). He was not born by the joining of human parents or from natural means, or by a man’s desire, but He was born of God (John 1:13). John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said, “And now I have seen with discernment. I can tell you for sure that this man is the Son of God” (I John 1:34). This is our Christmas message. Point to Jesus and let people know who He is!
