“Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
Love cleanses. Peter protested. Jesus’ response disclosed a spiritual significance that Peter did not yet understand. Later he would understand. Through the cross Jesus would provide a cleansing from sin for all those who accepted it. God saved us…through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:4-7). Yet a constant cleansing is also necessary “to remove the incidental defilement resulting from the casual contacts of life. The washing of the feet was typical of the daily purification of the soul from the travel stains of pilgrimage.” Give thanks today for the spiritual cleansing that Jesus provided for you—both the essential washing of regeneration and the daily renewing of the Holy Spirit.
