HOLY WEEK DEVOTIONS – WEDNESDAY APRIL 13, 2022

John 16  Focus verse: 16:33; John 18:1-11 (NIV)

As Jesus walked with His disciples from the place of the Last Supper toward the Garden of Gethsemane, He continued to press into their hearts important truths to sustain them in the coming dark hours.  He knew they would be shocked and overwhelmed by the imminent disaster.  He wanted them to remember His words when the crisis hit.  He wanted them to be able to find peace in spite of outward turmoil.  The hour was late, everyone was tired, but Jesus led them to Gethsemane—a favorite place to pray.  He went there with full knowledge that Judas was coming and would bring the authorities.  Hours had elapsed between the dismissal of Judas from the upper room and the actual arrest in the garden.

Jesus could have escaped from Jerusalem and been well on His way to a hiding place.  Instead, He went to Gethsemane with full knowledge that Judas had bargained with the priests for His betrayal and would look for Him in this familiar place.  He waited there in fervent prayer while the disciples fell asleep.  When the mob arrived, Jesus met them boldly.

He protected His disciples: “Let these go their way” (John 18:8).  There was no need to resist, no need to rebuke Judas.  The hour had come.  He would surrender to the plan, His Father’s will.  When we go through our own brand of hardships, take comfort in knowing that Jesus is fully aware of our status.  He provides divine peace, and even joy, to sustain us.  Our faith is meant for times when life is painful and doesn’t make sense.  Lean into Jesus and find the strength He has for you (John 14:27).
