Mark 10:45 (NLT) (Jesus speaking) “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
This verse captures well Jesus as a Servant and as the Redeemer of humanity (Phil 2:5-11). Mark aims his gospel at non-Jewish readers and shows how Christ’s own people rejected Him, yet “achieved ultimate victory through apparent defeat” (the defeat of the cross). Mark wrote a “gospel of action, moving rapidly from one scene to another.”* The word eutheos (usually translated “immediately”) occurs 42 times in Mark, “denoting continuous action” and a narrative that moved at a rapid pace. “The looks and gestures of Jesus receive unusual attention” while Mark placed little emphasis on Jewish law and customs since he was writing to a non-Jewish audience. When you read through Mark, put yourself into the narrative. It is written for you.
