Exodus 20:18-21 (focus verse 18) (NLT) When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
The giving of the Law came with a spectacular display in order to “disclose God’s awesome majesty and holiness in order to induce man to fear God.” The people needed a baseline respect and awe established in their hearts so that they would be warned of the terrifying consequences for anyone guilty of violating the Law of God. How far has our culture today drifted away from the awe and respect due to Jehovah God? Can we even begin to understand the impact that sin has had on our country? When we drift away from the foundational morals that the Ten Commandments established in ancient Israel, then we risk experiencing the kind of barbarianism that existed in those days. Watch the news and see sin at work, expressed in covetousness, adultery, murder, disrespect for authority, racism, the worship of false gods, and more. Because of Jesus, we who call Him Lord can draw near to God (Hebrews 10:22), but we must never lose our respect and awe of Him: “Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed by Thy Name…”
