John 1:48 (NIV) “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
We can only speculate what Nathanael was doing under that fig tree. Was he praying and reaching out to God? Was he meditating on scripture? Was he lifting needs to God through prayer, or complaining to God about the Romans? Jesus’ comment stunned Nathanael creating a highway directly into his heart. Nathanael reciprocated with an immediate confession of faith! The Passion Bible’s notes unpack this story with interesting background: “the fig tree is often a Biblical metaphor of God’s purpose and destiny coming to fruitfulness, especially as it relates to establishing God’s Kingdom on earth” (Micah 4:4; Zech. 3:10). This would be the first of many revelations that Nathanael would experience through Christ (vs. 50-51). God sees you and me! He knows our thoughts, worries, ambitions, and hunger for truth. There is always more to discover about Jesus, even after years of following Christ there is more for us. Keep your heart open. God has plans and purposes for you.
