There is one primary reason for Holy Spirit empowerment; and that is to enable us to be effective witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The early believers were baptized with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues (Acts 2:1-6). The same happens today, as so many of us have experienced. Something fundamentally engages within us as a result of Spirit-filled living, and it leads us into effective ministry on a level we have never experienced before. Our prayer life becomes invigorated. Our sensitivity to the spiritual dimension of life enhances. Our ability to “speak a word in season to him that is weary” (Isaiah 50:4) heightens. The bottom line, though, is that His power makes us effective witnesses. Don’t allow the distractions of life to draw your attention away from this spiritual dynamic. God needs an empowered church—not by self-effort, but by His Spirit.
