Isaiah 6:3 (NLT) – And (the seraphim) were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Isaiah saw the glory of God. Much later John saw a throne in heaven and heard the same sound: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and is, and is to come” (Rev. 4:2,8). Holiness is a central quality of God’s being. I don’t think we can even begin to understand what that true holiness is without Holy Spirit illumination because we, like Isaiah, “live among a people of unclean lips.” We are so accustomed to inhabiting a world that is thick with sin. When we finally open our eyes in Heaven one day, we will breathe the clear, fresh air of a world uncontaminated. Until then, we must daily “wash” ourselves with the Word of God, make fresh surrenders to Christ’s Lordship, and give the Holy Spirit the right to remove toxins from our souls. “Be ye holy as I am holy” is a process that requires our willingness to release sin in order to embrace Jesus and the holiness He inspires. He can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
