The psalmist looked up at the hills and saw idols and shrines to false gods dotting the landscape. While others prayed to gods who could not answer, he knew the Lord would hear and respond to his prayers. Today’s shrines and idols are of a different sort. People default to them when they are fearful, lonely, angry, or bored. They feed the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (I John 2:16). But we turn to our powerful, Creator God. He is our true help and protection.
