Exodus 5:2 (NIV) Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”
Pharaoh was the most powerful person in the ancient world and he “sniffed in disgust at the demands of Moses and Aaron.” Power struggles engaged. Pharaohs had godlike status. The plagues were necessary to answer Pharaoh’s defiant and scornful question. All the drama surrounding the Exodus compelled recognition of and submission to the Sovereignty of God. All the pain and conflict attached to letting God’s people go led to a universal testimony to the power and sovereignty of God. The leadership package includes dealing with rebellious, spiritual forces determined to undercut and destroy everything God wants to do. “All great spiritual leaders throughout history have found themselves in circumstances in which their leadership is both challenged and imperiled. The powers that keep people in bondage do not relinquish control very easily.” Victory does not come without conflict. The battles are won in the spiritual realm before they are manifested in the natural realm. Persevere!
