John 13:8 (NLT)
“No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!”
According to the custom of that day, a household servant washed the feet of guests who had come through the dust and filth of the street. “Since the last supper was held in a private home, and probably as a secret meeting, it is understandable why no servant was present to fulfill this task. Furthermore, the disciples’ minds were preoccupied with dreams of elevation to office in the coming kingdom. They were jealous lest one of their fellows should claim the best place. They were ready to fight for a throne, but not for a towel!” The episode of footwashing is more easily understandable if it is coupled with the quarrel of the disciples over who should be the greatest (Luke 22:24-30). But Christ transcended the barriers of social class and modeled how His followers should serve. In what ways are you stooping low to serve? Whose “feet” have you washed lately?
