Mark 10:28
“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”
James and John wanted to sit at seats of honor on the right and left of Jesus when He came into His glory. They were captivated by the grandeur of ministry; but Jesus pointed out a timeless truth. They did not understand the sacrifices, the dying to self, and the personal cross that is always necessary before glory can come. The cup and the baptism were two metaphors for the difficult realities of ministry—the suffering that precedes resurrection. Pick up your cross and follow me (Matt. 16:24). What is your cross—the difficult challenge that requires you lay down your life in order to serve others in life-changing ways? Jesus walked this path ahead of you. So take courage and carry your cross all the way home.
