John 14:7 (The Message)
If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well...
Philip interrupted Jesus. He wanted to see the Father as plainly as he could see Jesus. “Metaphysical distinctions and theological explanations meant comparatively little to him. He was slow to apprehend anything of an abstract nature; He was a practical man–not indifferent to spiritual truth, just baffled by it.” The human longing for a tangible God lies at the root of all idolatry. Man seeks a God in his own image, or in the image of what he conceives God to be. Wood and stone can never represent God. “Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the impress of His essential being (Heb 1:3).” He is God expressed in human flesh. His unity with the Father manifested the Father’s character and reality. His works revealed the Father’s will. They would understand this and live in it when the Spirit came.
