1 Kings 19:11
Go out and stand before me on the mountain…
In many ways Elijah’s experience at Mount Horeb’s cave is a representation of a place of despair, desolation, and dejection. After his profound experience on Mt. Carmel, Elijah ran for his life, collapsed in Horeb’s cave, and pled with God to take his life. But God “coaxed him out of his cave of depression and onto the mountain top. After ferocious winds shattering earthquakes and scorching fires (all void of God’s voice) came the perfect stillness in which God came to Elijah as a soft whisper.” This is our pattern for meditative, listening prayer. Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for Him (Ps. 37:7). When our emotions and thoughts whirl in sync with the busy physical activities of our days, it is critical that we learn how to still those anxious thoughts and emotions (winds, earthquakes, fires) and hear God’s voice. This discipline is not easily learned in our hectic culture, so we must intentionally pursue it. Make space for God’s quiet whisper!
