Luke 1:46 (NIV) And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…
Mary’s prophetic utterance is called “The Magnificat” (vs. 47-55) and it is a prophetic explosion of purpose and calling. It was a call to worship a holy God, to produce acts of compassion and deeds of mercy, to finally see the redemption of broken Israel, and to celebrate the arrival of: 1) food for the hungry, 2) relief from poverty, and 3) elevation of those who were oppressed. Mary’s calling was to bring Jesus into places of hunger and thirst (the Wedding in Cana), into places of poverty and oppression, into places where compassion and mercy were needed, and into the hearts of broken people everywhere. They were the central themes of her life, and she taught them to her children. Jesus had strong words for corrupt political leaders (i.e. Herod “the fox”). He had strong words for oppressive religious leaders. James (Jesus’ brother) addressed similar themes—blessing the poor, warning the rich, emphasizing mercy, faith, humility, peace, and wisdom. Where did they hear these themes? From their mother! Mary’s Magnificat was actually an expression from God’s heart both then and now. Let us bring Jesus into places of need all around us today.
