DAILY DEVOTIONS – MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2020

Genesis 1:1 (NIV)  In the beginning,  God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis means  “beginning,”  and there are so many beginnings in this book:  the revelation of God,  the material universe,  the human race,  the human family and human sin,  the revelation of a redemption plan,  the beginning of world nations and languages,  and the Hebrew race.  Jesus confirmed the authenticity and inspiration of Genesis (Matt. 19:4-6;  24:37-39).  Genesis is written in historical style, (not poetic,  not mythical) because it records history as fact,  not fable.  It is one of the two books in the Bible (other than Revelation) which Satan has attacked more than any other because it predicts his doom (Gen. 3:15) and Revelation seals his doom (Rev. 20:10).  The peculiarity of this book is that it begins with God and ends with a coffin—as if this were symbolic of the consequences of man’s fall.  How blessed we are to have the Bible and be able to unpack our ancient beginnings and see where we fit into the redemption story of mankind.  Give thanks today because Christ  “has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of the Son He loves,  in whom we have redemption,  the forgiveness of sins” (Col. 1:13-14).
