Deuteronomy 5:1 (NIV) Moses summoned all Israel and said: “Hear, O Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our fathers that the Lord made this covenant, but with all, with all of us who are alive here today.”
Moses was repeating the Law of God to a generation which had grown up in the wilderness and was, therefore, not adequately familiar with the Law given at Sinai, except Caleb and Joshua. It was just one month before they would enter the Promised Land. “Obedience” was the key word in Deuteronomy; and the Law of God was the plumb line for righteousness that needed to sit in the minds and hearts of all Israel not only for that generation, but for all generations to come. Even today, when this standard is etched into our hearts, it establishes boundaries that enable us to experience a safe, joyful life in which we honor God and respect those around us. History proves that when people ignore the laws of God, everyone suffers. Are you in an active study of God’s Word? Give precedence to daily Bible reading. Join a Bible study group.
