Acts 1:4b (TPT) …Jesus instructed them, “Don’t leave Jerusalem, but wait here until you receive the gift I told you about, the gift the Father has promised.”
Jesus had promised to send the “Spirit of truth” (John 14:16). The disciples could not carry out their commission without the fulness of the Spirit. “He lives with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). The disciples had seen this dynamic at work within Jesus. Now they would need the Holy Spirit’s leadership as they fulfilled their calling. “The purpose of many infallible proofs (1:3 KJV; convincing signs, TPT) was to leave no doubt whatsoever in the minds of the disciples inasmuch as the resurrection of Christ was of crucial importance in the Christian faith and would be fiercely challenged by the Lord’s enemies.” We need Holy Spirit empowerment today as surely as those early disciples needed Him. The message of Jesus will be increasingly challenged, manipulated, and misrepresented in our post-Christian culture. The Holy Spirit will guide us through minefields of misunderstanding and confirm the Word “with signs following” (Mark 16:20; Mark 16:17), convincing signs, and infallible proofs.
