DEVOTIONS – MON. APRIL 29, 2019

John 21:3 (The Message)

Simon Peter announced, “I’m going fishing.” The rest of them replied, “We’re going with you.” They went out and got in the boat. They caught nothing that night.

With all the blur of their last week in Jerusalem still fresh in their memories, the disciples withdrew into Galilee. It had been a trying and confusing period of their lives. Before He had died, Jesus had taught them more than their immature spiritual state could assimilate. Their hopes of an outward kingdom had shattered. Their leader died on a cross and they had been reduced from the position of disciples of an honored and popular teacher to that of the hunted partisans of a discredited impostor. Then came the resurrection, with startling appearances and unmistakable proof that Jesus had risen. So they withdrew to Galilee and its familiar haunts. Peter’s proposal to go fishing was not sinful, but it was dangerous. Jesus had trained them for something besides fishing. They must not forget the life they had been called to. What has God called you to? Are you being faithful to serve Him in that place? Or have you become distracted?
