The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
How many people crossed over? Well, there were 600,000 fighting men. Scholars calculate that this would mean at least 2.5 million people, including women and children. It was a mighty miracle—not exactly like the Red Sea miracle, but similar. And this generation of Israelites needed to see their own miracle with their own eyes, not just have one in their history books. Every generation of believers needs to witness their own miracle and come into an awareness of God’s mighty power. What has God done for you? What miracle have you seen in your lifetime that you knew was beyond the scope of human possibility? Tell your children, then pray for them to experience God’s power as well. They need their own story to tell.
