HOLY WEEK DEVOTIONS – TUESDAY APRIL 12, 2022

John 12:1-9 (NLT)

Mary and Martha’s dinner honored Jesus as a way to express deep appreciation for resurrecting their brother, Lazarus.  But while everyone celebrated, did Mary pick up on a melancholy tone in Jesus, something the others missed?  Was her shocking public display of affection (pouring her expensive perfume on His feet) a Spirit-led, prophetic act of worship?  As the fragrance filled the room, did the men’s chatter become quiet?  Did her grateful tears and her act of washing of Jesus’  feet shock and embarrass the men?  Did the uncomfortable moment find expression through Judas’  harsh comment?

Jesus defended Mary: You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.  He did not mean that the disciples should ignore the needs of the poor.  They exist in every society and it is part of our social responsibility to help them; but something bigger was going on here and Mary’s act took precedence at this moment.  Jesus explained: She did this in preparation for my burial.

Was Heaven sending a quiet sign of encouragement to Jesus as He neared the crucifixion?  Did the fragrance linger on Christ’s clothing in the difficult days ahead?  Maybe.  Mary’s act of worship ministered to Jesus.

Let us learn to worship well, with all our hearts.  Ignore the awkward self-consciousness produced by the voice of scrutiny.  Worship is a deeply personal, intimate act that Christ fully understands.  On this second day of HOLY WEEK, set aside time to shut out the world and give Jesus your purest worship.
